From university, TAFE and high school students, to career changes and women returning to the workforce, @Multiplan Pty Ltd is nurturing the next generation of construction modelling talent. Training Coordinator and Lead Modeller @John Towers shines the spotlight on how and why.
Construction modellers are in greater demand than ever. While this is good news for the steel detailing industry, the mounting pressure on skills and resources poses a challenge.
It’s a challenge Multiplan is meeting head-on.
As an industry leader, Multiplan has developed a multi-pronged approach to seeking out and nurturing the best and brightest up-and-coming talent.
And nobody knows the career opportunities on offer as well as John Towers.
Not only has John worked his way up the Multiplan ranks from trainee to highly skilled Lead Modeller and company shareholder, he is now also our talent-focused Training Coordinator with the future resourcing of our industry firmly in his sights.
Our trainees are crucial to our business – both today and tomorrow – and John is the perfect mentor and coach to guide them as their career takes off.
“Nurturing the next generation of talent is paramount for the sustainability of both our business and our industry, especially as demand for complex construction models shows no signs of slowing down,” John says.
“But there’s no single solution when it comes to attracting up-and-coming talent, which is why we’ve developed a number of initiatives to bolster our team and help secure the skills needed for the future of our industry.”
John works closely with TAFE colleges to offer work experience as well as traineeships for graduating students.
Trainee Chris Hill was referred to Multiplan after completing a Certificate III in Technical Engineering at South Metropolitan TAFE, while several other Multiplan trainees have been introduced to construction modelling via the college’s six-month Women in Defence Industry Scholarship.
By networking with schools, universities and colleges, and providing work experience placements, we’re increasing awareness of construction modelling as a tech-savvy profession with enormous career potential for both girls and boys.
John has been bringing our Women in Steel campaign into the spotlight, both for new talent and women returning to the workforce. As a leader in delivering complex projects through precision modelling and steelwork detailing, Multiplan believes women can help provide the home-grown talent needed to meet rising demand for the latest 3D modelling technology.
For Luciana Foreli, becoming a Multiplan trainee is building on the degree she obtained in industrial design in Brazil. Luciana is currently completing an Advanced Diploma in Project Management as she works towards her career goals, while Kryzzia Cabrera swapped psychology studies to join the Multiplan team and follow in her father’s footsteps.
Our HQ may be in Perth but we’re regularly called on to work on projects anywhere in Australia or overseas. Working remotely, often across changing time zones, helps us offer the flexible hours, part-time positions, and hybrid working arrangements that contribute to building a strong, adaptable and highly-skilled team.
At Multiplan we recognise that many of the skills we look for, such as attention to detail and time management, are readily transferable from other industries and occupations. After joining our trainee program 18 months ago, former baker Jamie Miranda is now honing his skills as a fully-fledged construction modeller and completing a Diploma in Project Management.
